The area we're going to is in the South-West of Africa, mostly Genadendal. Of course I already got some information about life in South-Africa from Thandiwe, but I should look for more info and also inform you.

Thandiwe lives in Hermanus, a city between Genadendal and Cape town, and then further down. I saw Thandiwe's house and the environment of Hermanus and Genadendal on Googlemaps, Hermanus has sand roads, but also concrete roads. They do have simpler houses then we have here, but they all use normal brick, the wooden houses or huts you maybe expect aren't there. The colours are surprising, sometimes the houses make me think of spain. Also there's a lot of nature left, not all concrete and brick like here in the Netherlands.

Genadendal isn't very large. Thandiwe called it a farm... It says on the internet it has about 3500 inhabitants and there's quite much unemployment. The school we're going to visit is in Genadendal and we also sleep in a kind of hostel/accommodation there. The school is a boarding school, so the students also sleep there, in two buildings next to the school. Girls and boys apart. Once in the two weeks the students go home to their family, so they don't see each other much. To me it seems that you're already moved out.

The children at the school need to pass an exam to get a diploma, but they also need to pay money, and mostly this money isn't there, so no further education follows. Therefore, a lot of people are unemployed. Also we we're told people have a lot of alcohol- or drugsproblems there. Our school/our project, also pays some money to the Emil Weder school (the school in Genadendal), this is so that more children can make this exam and get a diploma or study, so they can have a better future.

Also, I heard from Thandiwe that teenage pregnancies aren't very unusual. The students in school are getting used to the pregnant girls, although I think they still are surprised. Some parents are therefore strict when it comes to boys, and the school is also strict when it comes to relationships, so I heard. No kissing in school will be tolerated and also no nailpolish is allowed. It's quite weird, I see students at school every single day, but I never saw a pregnant girl.. Why is this so different?

Being strict doesn't help I think, better education/information/support about/for relationships etc. would be a better idea. But that's my opinion, and maybe we can learn those children something in our lesson, but maybe they just want to make fun.. I haven't decided yet what's the best idea, of course I want it to make a little educational as well, I hope we can make a change for them.
